ACRS International Student Fellowships
to attend
the
11th International Coral Reef Symposium
Fort Lauderdale, Florida,
USA, 7 - 11 July 2008
INTENT
The ACRS International Student Fellowships are to support outstanding
postgraduate students with the aim of providing students with experience
and international contacts that they would not otherwise acquire.
By attending the international conference the students will serve
an important role as ambassadors for Australian coral reef science
through improving the awareness in the international scientific
community of the work of Australian coral reef research students.
It is planned to award several Fellowships to cover the cost of
an international airfare and the cost of registration.
ELIGIBILITY
A candidate must:

Be a financial member of ACRS;

Be EITHER a postgraduate student enrolled full-time or part-time
at an Australian University who has, by the application deadline,
not yet submitted their thesis;
OR have been recently enrolled as a postgraduate
student at an Australian University and have submitted their
thesis within the twelve month period preceding the deadline
for applications;

Payment of the Fellowship will be conditional on presenting
a paper at the Conference. (The Society will make very attempt
to ensure that all successful Fellows will be able to present
an oral presentation);

Preference will be given to students who have not previously
presented at an international conference.

Preference may also be given to applicants who are full-time
or part-time students with limited funds or income to support
their travel.

Successful students will be expected to provide a short biography,
an abstract of their paper and a short account of the conference
for publication in the ACRS Newsletter following the meeting.
APPLICATIONS
Applicants should submit:
- A brief covering letter (no more than 1 A4 page) addressing
the following three criteria:
i) the significance of their research;
ii) the value of presenting the work to an international audience;
and
iii) the benefit to the student of attending the conference;
- Title and abstract of the paper to be presented. The abstract
should follow the guidelines provided by the 11ICRS Conference
Organising Committee, which can be found on the conference web
site (http://www.nova.edu/ncri/11icrs/
- A brief outline (no more than 3 A4 pages) of the research to
be presented, including Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion;
- A letter from their supervisor providing:
- confirmation that the candidate is an enrolled postgraduate
student or has submitted their thesis within the time limit;
and
- confirmation that the paper being offered is the candidate's
own work;
- Amount requested and details of support received from other
sources for attending this meeting.
- A brief CV (no more than 2 A4 pages)
- This material must reach the Chairman of the Selection committee
(Pat Hutchings) by Thursday 15th November 2007 and
notification will be by early November 2007.
- Applications and scanned copies of signed supervisor endorsement

- Late applications will not be considered.
- Applications from non-financial applicants will not
be considered.
All students considering attending the Conference
in MUST submit an abstract to the ISRS conference
organising committee by the conference deadline of
15 November 2007. Applicants for ACRS Fellowships that are unsuccessful,
and who are not able to attend the Conference, must withdraw their
abstract by notifying the Conference organising committee. ACRS
students may like to consider joining the ISRS for 2007/8 in order
to receive student discounts on Conference registration. See the
