Student Travel Grants

The ACRS is offering travel assistance for students to attend the ACRS Annual Scientific Conference in Fremantle, WA, from 9 – 11 October 2007. Any student who is currently enrolled at an Australian university and working towards a PhD or MSc, or who has very recently submitted their thesis, on a topic involving research on Australian coral reefs is eligible to apply. Students will be expected to meet the costs of their conference registration, accommodation and meals from other sources.

Applicants must be a financial member of the society before applying for a travel award, and must make a formal presentation on their research at the conference.

Applications consisting of no more than four A4 pages must be received by Friday 30 March 2007 and must include the following information:

  1. Name, address, and details of your postgraduate enrolment
  2. Title of proposed presentation and either an indicative abstract or an outline of the research to be presented (maximum of half a page)
  3. Statement of justification explaining why you wish to attend the ACRS conference and the benefits that will result (maximum of half a page)
  4. A succinct curriculum vitae or resume (maximum of 2 pages)
  5. Anticipated cost of air fares, based on best available internet prices
  6. A statement from your supervisor or an official representative of the university, verifying that you are enrolled in postgraduate study or have very recently submitted your thesis.

Ordinarily, eligible students will receive a cheque at the conference in support of their travel, and are therefore expected to meet the up-front cost of travel out of their own budget or through their supervisor’s funds. However, given the distance and extra cost involved in travelling to Western Australian, consideration may be given to providing prior funding for fares in exceptional circumstances – applicants will need to provide relevant justification at the time of application.

Please email your application to zdinesen@bigpond.net.au with a cc. to sward@cms.uq.edu.au. Your supervisor or an official representative of the university should send a separate email by the closing date, verifying that you are enrolled in postgraduate study or have very recently submitted your thesis.

Note that late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
