Outstanding Australian and International plenary speakers

Professor Charles Sheppard holds a position at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom. He also spends time on a range of UN, governmental and aid agencies in tropical marine and coastal development issues, advising governments on marine and coastal management. His research interests include biogeography and biodiversity of Indo-Pacific coral reefs; development of wide scale reef monitoring programmes; marine habitat mapping; inter-habitat interactions; GIS based coastal zone management development; the consequences; recovery or recurrence of the recent episodes of massive reef mortality in the Indian Ocean; marine biodiversity research (using remote sensing); community changes along pollution and sedimentation gradients; and linking climate data to marine environmental changes.

Professor Peter Sale holds a position at the University of Windsor, Canada. He is interested in the structure and organization of ecological communities and in the responses of individuals and populations to their environment. His work concerns communities of fish, particularly those in coral reef habitats, and links between research and management. His current focus is on recruitment and juvenile ecology of freshwater and coral reef fishes, and on sustainable management of coral reef systems.

Dr Barry Wilson is a consultant to the Public Sector on marine and conservation matters. He is based in Western Australia and is a world authority on marine molluscs. His fields of expertise include nature conservation and biodiversity policy development; protected area management; marine ecology; taxonomy; and museum curation.
